An ever increasing amount of research is showing that sitting and being sedentary for long periods of time are linked to poor health. It is difficult to counteract the negative effects of being sedentary as even exercise does not fully neutralize the ill effects of sitting.

This study found that woman who sat for long periods of time have a lower mortality rate if they considered themselves to be moderately to very fidgety. Whereas, women that sat for long periods of time without fidgeting had an increased risk of death that was not seen in other groups in the study. Although, researchers did not find a difference in mortality risk between women who sat more compared to women that were more active — as long as the sitters were fidgety. The study was conducted through a survey of 14,000 women from ages 35 to 69 and the women were followed for an average of 12 years.
